Laminate Flooring in Wimbledon, SW19

Wimbledon, SW19
March 2026

We recently completed a full laminate flooring installation across a Victorian terraced property in Wimbledon, SW19. The customer wanted to replace tired carpet with modern laminate that could handle family life while maintaining the period character of the home. Our team fitted 85 square metres of premium laminate throughout the ground floor and hallway, managing the logistics of a busy household with children and pets.

Work carried out

  • Removal and disposal of existing carpet and underlay
  • Preparation of subfloors, including levelling compound where required
  • Installation of moisture barrier and acoustic underlay
  • Fitting of laminate planks throughout ground floor and hallway
  • Installation of beading, transitions, and threshold strips
  • Removal of all packaging and site debris

About the project

The property in question was a typical Victorian terrace with solid concrete ground floor and suspended timber joists in the hall and stairs. The existing carpet had been down for over a decade and had absorbed moisture in places, which meant we had to address damp management before laying anything new. We used a moisture meter on arrival and found readings above 12% in two areas, so we recommended and installed a proper vapour barrier. This step isn't glamorous but it's the difference between a floor that lasts ten years and one that cups and warps within three.

The main challenge was working around the family's schedule. They had young children and a dog that needed access to the kitchen, and they wanted minimal disruption. We split the job across three days, tackling the formal lounge and dining room first, then the hallway and kitchen the following week. This meant making temporary transitions and protecting doorways carefully. The suspended timber floor in the hallway required careful acclimatisation of the laminate, as these spaces can move more than solid concrete. We left the planks stacked in the room for 48 hours before installation to let them adjust to the ambient moisture, and we fitted expansion gaps around all perimeters, which is essential in older properties where floors shift seasonally.

About our Wimbledon, SW19 service

Wimbledon is a mixed area when it comes to property stock. You've got Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semi detached homes making up much of the residential fabric, many of which still have original suspended timber floors or a mix of solid concrete and timber. There are also newer apartment blocks and some 1960s and 1970s developments. This variety means we need to adjust our approach on nearly every job. Victorian homes often have uneven floors that need levelling compound. Edwardian properties sometimes have concrete ground floors that were laid without damp proof membranes, which requires careful handling. Newer builds tend to have more predictable conditions but can sometimes have cheap subfloors that benefit from extra underlay for comfort and durability.

We've fitted laminate in hundreds of Wimbledon homes over the past twelve years. The area's tree lined streets and proximity to green spaces means moisture levels are generally higher than in drier parts of south London, particularly in basements and north facing rooms. We always recommend moisture testing before any laminate installation in this postcode, and we spec thicker underlays as standard. Families in Wimbledon tend to want practical, hardwearing floors that can take heavy footfall and pet traffic, so we see a lot of demand for laminate that mimics wood but offers better durability.

Frequently asked questions

How much does laminate fitting cost in Wimbledon?

Fitting costs typically range from £35 to £60 per square metre, depending on the complexity of the job. Properties with uneven floors, multiple rooms, or awkward layouts tend toward the higher end. A standard 80 square metre ground floor in a Victorian property usually costs between £2,800 and £4,800 for fitting alone. We always survey the space and provide a detailed quotation before starting work.

How long does it take to fit laminate flooring?

A typical room takes one to two days depending on size and layout. An 80 square metre ground floor spread across several rooms usually takes three to four working days when you include subfloor preparation. We can often complete smaller spaces like single rooms or hallways within a day. We'll give you a clear timeline during the survey visit.

What preparation is needed before laminate fitting?

The subfloor must be clean, dry, and reasonably level. We'll clear existing flooring, check moisture levels, and use levelling compound if the surface deviates by more than 3mm over a metre. Skirting boards need to come off before fitting and usually go back on afterwards. In older properties with suspended floors, we spend extra time ensuring structural movement won't cause problems. Your surveyor will explain exactly what's needed for your property.
