We recently completed a full parquet floor fitting project in a Victorian terrace in Fulham, SW6. The client wanted to restore period character to their reception rooms whilst maintaining a contemporary finish. The work involved fitting new parquet blocks, preparing the subfloor, and ensuring a professional installation that would withstand daily use.
The property in question was a three storey Victorian terrace with original floorboards in poor condition. The client had removed carpet from two reception rooms and wanted parquet installed to add warmth and period authenticity. The existing floor had significant movement and unevenness, common in properties of this age. We needed to prepare the surface carefully before laying new blocks to ensure a stable, level finish that would last.
Our approach was methodical. We first inspected the subfloor and made minor levelling corrections using self levelling compounds where necessary. We then set out the parquet pattern to work symmetrically from the centre of each room, avoiding narrow slivers at the walls. The fitting took approximately four days for the two rooms combined, including time for the adhesive to cure. Once the blocks were fully set, we sanded the entire floor to create a smooth, uniform surface, then applied a durable polyurethane sealer that provides both protection and a soft natural appearance.
Fulham is one of London's most desirable residential areas, characterised by a mix of Victorian and Edwardian properties alongside newer developments. We have extensive experience working in this neighbourhood, where period properties dominate. Many homeowners in SW6 invest in restoring original character features, and parquet flooring is a natural choice for reception rooms and hallways in these older homes. The area also has a number of newer apartment blocks where contemporary floating parquet systems are preferred. Whatever the property type, we approach each job with careful attention to the existing structure and the client's aesthetic goals.
Victorian and Edwardian properties in Fulham typically have suspended timber floors or concrete bases with varying degrees of movement and settlement. Newer builds usually have concrete screed over solid foundations. Each requires a different approach to parquet installation. We assess the specific conditions of each property and recommend the most appropriate fitting method, whether that's using flexible adhesives, engineered parquet blocks, or traditional fixed systems. Our knowledge of local building types means we anticipate potential issues and plan accordingly.
How much does parquet floor fitting cost in Fulham?
Fitting costs typically range from £35 to £60 per square metre, depending on the complexity of the layout, the condition of the existing floor, and the type of parquet blocks being installed. Victorian properties with uneven subfloors or detailed room shapes may fall at the higher end of this range. We provide a detailed site survey and quotation before any work begins.
How long does fitting take?
For a typical reception room of 20 to 30 square metres, fitting usually takes three to four days. This includes subfloor preparation, laying the blocks, and allowing adhesive to cure. Larger areas or complex layouts may take longer. We will give you a realistic timeline during the initial consultation, accounting for the specific conditions of your property.
What preparation is required before fitting?
We inspect the subfloor thoroughly to check for damp, movement, and levelness. Uneven areas are levelled with self levelling compound or grinding. Any existing flooring must be removed. The room needs to be clear of furniture and ideally sealed off from the rest of the property to control dust during sanding. We will advise on all preparation needs during our survey visit.
